Backers of Anthropic Hold Stakes Worth Billions Ahead of Potential $2 Trillion IPO

Early investors in the AI giant see portfolios swell to billions of dollars at the company's current private valuation of $965 billion.

Anticipation for Anthropic’s upcoming public listing has surged, with market watchers predicting a valuation that could reach $2 trillion later this year. Even before the stock trades on public exchanges, the mathematics of the company’s growth has already generated immense wealth for its earliest supporters. At the most recent private market valuation of $965 billion, the stakes held by venture capital firms and individual early backers aggregate to billions of dollars, marking a significant financial milestone for the leading AI laboratory.

Eric Schmidt, the former chief executive of Google, stands among the most prominent beneficiaries of this appreciation. Schmidt participated in the company’s Series A funding round in 2021, a period when PitchBook data indicates the startup was valued at $461 million. His investment has since matured into an ownership stake of approximately 1%. At the current private valuation, this slice of the company is valued at nearly $10 billion, a figure that reflects the dramatic expansion of the AI sector over the past few years.

Later-stage investors have also secured substantial returns, with Iconiq Capital writing a $6 billion check to Anthropic last year. That investment occurred when the company was already valued at $183 billion. The position is currently appraised at $17 billion, a significant gain that analysts suggest could double once the initial public offering is completed. This massive late-stage bet underscores the confidence large institutional investors place in the company’s trajectory despite its already high entry price.

Menlo Ventures, which led the Series D round, has committed over $1 billion to the AI lab over time. The firm’s accumulated stake is now valued at $14 billion. Similarly, Sequoia Capital entered the picture earlier this year, backing the company when its valuation stood at $380 billion. Sequoia’s $3 billion investment secured roughly 1% ownership, a move that has already more than doubled the value of its initial capital within a short timeframe.

Sound Ventures, a firm co-founded by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, has also seen its portfolio value increase substantially. The firm initially invested $35 million in the 2023 Series C round and has since added another $400 million to its holdings. While the exact current value is described as being in the billions, the trajectory mirrors other early backers. Notably, Kutcher departed Sound Ventures this year to launch his own venture capital firm, leaving the existing Anthropic stake within the original entity.

Perhaps the most striking multiple belongs to Spark Capital, the only venture capital firm known to hold a board seat at Anthropic. The firm invested $75 million during the 2023 Series C, when the company was valued at just $5 billion. That position has since ballooned more than ninetyfold, reaching a valuation of $7 billion. Such growth highlights the outsized returns possible for investors who enter before a technology company reaches its peak valuation.

The collective wealth of these backers illustrates the financial gravity of Anthropic’s impending market debut. As the company prepares for its public listing, the distribution of shares will determine the final windfall for each investor. For now, at the $965 billion mark, the early and mid-stage backers have already secured positions worth billions, setting the stage for what could be one of the most significant financial events in the technology sector this year.
