$1.25 trillion. That is the pre-money valuation OpenAI is reportedly targeting in its latest fundraising effort. The company appears to be prioritizing a massive private round over an immediate public listing. Sources tell CNBC that the AI lab is close to securing up to $30 billion in new capital. This move signals a strategic pause before going public.
The terms are still being negotiated, so the final numbers could shift. A month ago, Bloomberg reported that OpenAI was looking to raise the same amount but at a higher $1.4 trillion valuation. The current reports suggest a slight adjustment downward in the valuation target. Coatue is leading this specific round. Investors from the United Arab Emirates are also expected to participate in the deal.
There is more to this transaction than just cash on the table. CNBC notes that the UAE funding might be tied to a separate agreement. This deal would secure additional computing capacity for OpenAI from the region. Such infrastructure is critical for training and running large language models. OpenAI declined to comment on the details of these negotiations.
Crossing the one-trillion-dollar mark would set a new record for the private sector. OpenAI would become the most valued private company ever. This milestone would also raise the stakes for its upcoming initial public offering. The company filed confidential paperwork for an IPO in June of this year. That filing came after a March funding round that valued the firm at $852 billion on a post-money basis.
The high bar set by this new round could impact other players in the AI space. Anthropic, a major competitor, is also preparing for a public debut. Many industry watchers believe its IPO is imminent. Rumors suggest that Anthropic could file its public S-1 document any day now. The company is reportedly seeking a valuation between $1.5 and $2 trillion for its launch.
Anthropic raised $65 billion in May at a $965 billion valuation. At the time, many believed that was its final major private round before going public. It also filed confidential IPO paperwork in June. With OpenAI potentially setting a new valuation ceiling, the pressure on competitors to justify their own numbers is intense. The race to dominate the public markets is heating up.
